The Paddock Garden is situated on Newland, Sherborne DT9 3DX if you wish to visit it and view our landscaping first hand.
The gardens were part of the sports facility of Digby’s Grammar School which occupied Sherborne House on the other side of Newland until 1992. In 2005 Sherborne Town Council launches a competition to design a public garden for the now disused tennis courts. The design chosen was by Alistair Wemyss, The Company of Landscapers won the contract to take the concept, develop, manage and built the new garden.
Working from a basic layout but in close collaboration with the Town Council the site was cleared and a boundary wall built using local Sherborne stone.
Upper and lower lawn areas where children can run and play are divided by a terrace large enough for outdoor performances. One of the lawns has a maze small maze laid into it and a sundial marking an old well which was discovered during the works. Pathways circumnavigate and cross the garden for access and many seats were donated by businesses and individuals, these occur at regular intervals and some good views of the Abbey can be seen from the upper area.
Many of the plants were also sponsored by local people. The garden has developed well with the care and attention of the Town Council Maintenance Department.
